Impact of Covid-19 on children and adolescents

(Last Updated On: April 01, 2021)

It has been observed by several researchers, scholars and doctors that COVID-19 has a multifactorial impact on adolescents and childrens. Ever since the virus came into the picture in 2019 it changed the way human beings organize their social well being and since then the whole world is in a state of maximum alert. Many researchers have been observing the effect of this virus on different demographics of locations, ages, etc.

In the second wave of the pandemic, doctors are witnessing a reverse trend where children are developing symptoms before adults. In the first wave most children were asymptomatic where now they are exhibiting symptoms like fever, cold, cough, loss of appetite, among other common symptoms. The challenging situation for parents is when their child catches COVID-19 and they don’t know what to do next. Let us discuss some of the important points on how one can manage children diagnosed with Covid-19 disease.

Management of Children with Covid-19 disease

Children with Covid 19 infection may be asymptomatic, mildly symptomatic, moderately sick or severe illness.

Asymptomatic – Such children do not require any treatment except for care and monitoring for development of symptoms and subsequent symptomatic treatment if required.

Mild Disease – The basic symptoms for mild disease are sore throat, rhinorrhea, cough with no breathing difficulty. Few children even show gastrointestinal symptoms. Such children need better care and proper investigation through a doctor. Once the treatment starts you should isolate them but regularly monitor their symptoms. If a child undergoing an existing medical condition tests positive for COVID-19, it is recommended that they be admitted to the hospital for proper care.

Moderate – A child is categorized as having moderate Covid 19 disease if they have rapid respiration rate and their oxygen saturation rate is above 90%. They can even show symptoms of pneumonia which may clinically be not apparent. Such children with moderate disease should be admitted in a dedicated covid health centre or secondary level healthcare facility and monitored for clinical progress and should be given more extensive care following up on proper diet and medication.

Severe – A child is categorized as going through severe Covid-19 infection if they have SpO2 level less than 90%. Such children should be immediately admitted to a dedicated Covid hospital or a secondary or tertiary level healthcare facility. Few children may require care in HDU/ICU areas of these facilities if they are going through high and severe degrees of the infection.

At all levels, taking precautions by the parents is a must as the disease is contagious. Proper covid guidelines should be followed, which include wearing masks, using sanitizers or wiping the floors and surfaces with disinfectants which are touched or used by an infected person.
